The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously permissive, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
